A World Unraveling

In a world unraveling, there is still friendship. In the midst of all this momentary turmoil, old friends often appear to make life seem normal again. One such friend — a friend of some 30 years — came back to town this weekend. No notice of her impending arrival, only a spontaneous phone call . Her voice took me back to a place in time that I rarely frequent now. Over several days and several meals, we catch up. Her stories leave me laughing out loud again and again. People in restaurants turn their heads and stare. We are in the midst of a time warp, traveling to another time and place.

Keeping My Chin Up

When my younger sister found out I was having eye surgery, her
advice to me was, “Keep your chin up”. After her own eye procedures,
this was the best she could come up with. But now I realize that these were true words of wisdom — both literally and figuratively speaking.

Like all medical procedures, this surgery brings on outrageous fear in me. What is that laser going to do to my eye? Why can’t they find the vein for my IV? I CAN’T wear mascara? I really CAN’T lift anything or bend over for two weeks? Do I need three kinds of eyedrops four times a day?

Now however, the first surgery is over and things are going well.
I am still keeping my chin up when I pick up objects from the lower
levels in the kitchen. The dishes get into the dishwasher with my
chin up. I have learned to master the yard stick to retrieve shoes
and clothes on the floor. It is amazing what your toes can pick up
when you ask them to. And still no mascara.

This goes on for four weeks and then we repeat the procedure in the other eye. If only I were still in school, what a story I would have to tell — “what I did on my summer vacation”.
